In this episode, I share tips on how to save money on your vegan grocery bill.

Tips mentioned:

  • Shop at your regular grocery store for essentials like spinach, potatoes, etc and only shop health food stores for harder to find items like nutritional yeast, meat alternatives, etc.
  • Get your butt in the kitchen and cook
  • Plan for leftovers -- I usually plan 4-5 dinners each week then stretch those out to save money and time
  • Just because you're eating vegan, it doesn't mean everything has to be organic --- buy what you can afford. Check out the Environmental Working Group's list of produce that are sprayed with pesticides the most. Just get started and make adjustments as you move forward.
  • Keep it simple. There's no need to be a gourmet chef every night. Simple meals like tacos, spaghetti, and stew are simple and filling. Save the elaborate meals for the weekend.
  • Plan your meals

The holidays are coming, so I had to invite Tracye McQuirter on the podcast to talk about how to navigate a vegan lifestyle during this season.

Tracye is a 30-year vegan, national best-selling author, public health nutritionist, international speaker, and vegan trailblazer. She was named a national food hero changing the way America eats for the better by Vegetarian Times, and her national best-seller, By Any Greens Necessary, was the number one recommended vegan book on The Huffington Post. For 25 years, she's been teaching people throughout the United States and abroad how and why to go vegan for better health. She's been featured in more than 100 media outlets, including CBS News, Fox News, The Huffington Post, and The Washington Post. Tracye has a master's degree in public health nutrition from New York University.

Her tips:

  • Be gentle with yourself and others - RELAX!
  • Never talk about veganism at the Thanksgiving dinner table
  • Bring enough food for yourself and others
  • It's okay not to eat traditional Thanksgiving meals...even though you sure can do that!

Notable Quote from Tracye: "Liberate your mind and your mouth will follow."

Other topics we chatted about:

  • The importance of determining your why when you're going vegan
  • Why community is essential to a long-term vegan life
  • How veganism is a black movement

I answered this question several months ago but wanted to put in with a podcast episode because it's so important.

How in the heck do you plan meals without meat being the center of the meal?

Get all the resources mentioned in this episode here... http://www.brownvegan.com/podcast/how-to-put-together-your-vegan-meals

Some people think you can only get protein from chicken, beef, fish, eggs, etc. but this isn't the case at all. There are sooo many plant-based options that can easily replace the meat on your plate.

The best way to approach vegan life when you're getting started is to think about what you're already eating and how you can make a vegan version of that meal.

In this episode, I used vegan fried chicken, taco salad and chili as examples of how this would look.

Try not to overthink your meal planning, be gentle with yourself and I promise it will get easier once you're consistent.

I love eating out and I don't let being a vegan slow that down for me.

In the beginning of this journey I did because it was just too much to think about and I didn't like asking the server a million questions. It feel like it was taking away from the experience. *sigh*

Anywho, like I said, I love eating out.

In this podcast episode, I give you tips to feel more comfortable about eating out at restaurants and family/work-related events.

Quick recap:

  • Check out the restaurant’s menu online before you get to the restaurant
  • Use happycow.net to find vegan-friendly restaurants near you
  • Think about what the chef has in the kitchen
  • Don’t be afraid to make a meal out of side dishes
  • Bring a dish to the event, so you’re guaranteed to have something to eat
  • Eat before you go and after you leave- keep emergency snacks in the car because life is too short to be hungry

Happy New Year!

In this podcast, I talk about the 4 mindset shifts that must happen in order for you to start a vegan journey in the new year.

Get all of the resources mentioned in this episode here

http://www.brownvegan.com/podcast/17-4-mindset-shifts-to-go-vegan-in-the-new-year

  • Write down why you want to go vegan - Is it for ethical, health or environmental reasons? Maybe it's a little bit of everything. Take a few minutes and write down your reasons and visualize how your life will look after the transformation. Having this purpose on paper will give you something to refer back to when you get discouraged.  Write it down, make it happen!
  • Make the decision - If you don't decide to go vegan, you will always make excuses about why you can't do it. When you make the decision to take this step, you're more likely to research and take action. There's so much power in that declaration!
  • This journey is NOT perfect - Please don't beat yourself up! You will fall. You will feel overwhelmed. Some days cooking will be the last thing you want to do! Hold on! You got this! Always remember progression over perfection!
  • You need a meal plan - There's really no way around this one. You must plan your meals in order to stay on track. Use Pinterest, Findingvegan, Google and library books for ideas. You can also check out my recipe page for suggestions. Also, check out this previous article with 5 Meal Planning Tips for New Families

So many people start a vegan journey to lose weight and fall off when the results don't happen fast enough. This wasn't the case at all for Chemese!

In the latest podcast episode, I talk to Chemese about her journey and why she started a 100-day detox to ring in the new year with clarity, exercise and nothing but fresh juice & smoothies.
